Element of surprise
In een land waar ruimte tot op de centimeter nauwkeurig wordt gepland, onderhandeld en gedefinieerd, lijkt er weinig ruimte over te blijven voor het onverwachte. Het werk Element of Surprise (2015) introduceert precies dat: een moment van fictieve verstoring binnen de strak gereguleerde realiteit van de Nederlandse ruimtelijke ordening.
De aanleiding was de uitbreiding en verplaatsing van de haven van Lobith, een project waarin de belangen van scheepvaart, ecologie, veiligheid en eigendom elkaar kruisen in een juridisch en administratief oerwoud. Ik reageerde op deze complexiteit door een scenario te ontwikkelen waarin een voetbrug losbreekt van de haven en – op een willekeurig moment, op een onverwachte plek – aan land spoelt.
Wat begon als hypothetisch onderzoek kreeg onverwacht een fysieke basis toen ik een vergeten stuk land ontdekte waarvan de eigenaar geen idee had dat hij het bezat. Deze onbedoelde restruimte werd de plek waar de voetbrug in het landschap verankerd kon worden: als een sculpturale anomalie, een stille botsing tussen fictie en regelgeving.
Elements of Surprise roept vragen op over controle, toeval en eigendom. Het werk legt de fragiele grens bloot tussen gepland en ongepland, tussen systeem en ruimte, tussen infrastructuur en verbeelding.
In a country where space is planned, negotiated, and defined down to the last centimeter, there seems to be little room left for the unexpected. The work Element of Surprise (2015) introduces precisely that: a moment of fictional disruption within the tightly regulated reality of Dutch spatial planning.
The impetus was the expansion and relocation of the harbor at Lobith, a project in which the interests of shipping, ecology, safety, and property intersect in a legal and administrative jungle. I responded to this complexity by developing a scenario in which a footbridge breaks away from the harbor and—at a random moment, in an unexpected place—washes up on land.
What began as hypothetical research unexpectedly gained physical grounding when I discovered a forgotten piece of land whose owner had no idea they owned it. This unintended residual space became the place where the footbridge could be anchored in the landscape: as a sculptural anomaly, a silent collision between fiction and regulation.
Elements of Surprise raises questions about control, chance, and property. The work exposes the fragile boundary between planned and unplanned, between system and space, between infrastructure and imagination.
